My 10 Favorite Resources to Help You Discover What You Wanna Do When You Grow Up - When I Grow Up
My 10 Favorite Resources to Help You Discover What You Wanna Do When You Grow Up - When I Grow Up Explore Dream Discover print by The Love Shop This post was originally published in March of 2014, but was updated in August 2014. I remember when I first heard the whisper in the back of my mind that told me I no longer wanted to pursue acting as my career. I ignored it for as long as I could, but when it got louder and louder I knew I couldnt keep willing it to go away. I needed help figuring out what career I could be passionate about as a grown-up that could support me. For 20 years, all I wanted was to be on Broadway and without that dream, I didnt even know who I was, nevertheless what I could do professionally. I started with a copy of What Color is Your Parachute? Not only had it been the career change bible for decades, but it had helped my friend find a very small niche in the advertising world that seemed to be a perfect fit for her education, experience and skill set. I had less luck with it, and ended up throwing it across the room in exasperation after the third exercise. Then, I found a social worker who I was told helped creative types through their career changes. I spent $500 of my Moms money (she knew how important it was to me and gave it to me as a gift) to be told at the end of our second session that, if I got a nose job, maybe Id get more acting jobs. No, I didnt bring up my nose at all (I actually think I have a fine nose). And no, I wasnt there to discover how I could get more acting jobs. I was there to try to find my passionate, grown-up career and again, I wound up despondent. Writing this now, I guess it shouldnt have been such a surprise that I chucked the stability I was craving, became a certified life coach (of all unstable things!), and became the career coach I needed at the time. Here are the 10 things that I recommend to practically everyone who talks to me about this stuff, and what Ive created to help other creatives not be so despondent themselves: The Renaissance Soul: Life Design for People with Too Many Passions To Pick Just One. This is the book Ive been mentioning over and over again to anyone who I sense can resonate with the subtitle. Its one of a half-dozen books I purchased when I was writing my research paper for my coaching certification, but the only one that I read cover to cover and kept coming back to. It doesnt specifically talk about career change, per se, but simply knowing that us creatives arent flaky, ADD, or bound to not follow through is the ultimate peace of mind. Once we can embrace it instead of deny it, it makes all the difference. A good counterpoint to this is The Renaissance Business, for those who know they want to be entrepreneurs and are looking to build a successful business as a multipotentialite. 10 Ways to Discover Work That Feels Like Play. I created these videos last summer and still remain so proud of them. Theyre offered as a daily email to those on my VIP List, and takes the viewer through my top 10 tips to holistically and authentically find your passionate career. Heres the first one: Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type. On its own, I dont think the book can deliver on what the subtitle promises. Theres so much more that goes into discovering your perfect career, like your values, skill set, interests, etc. That said, though, I give my career change clients an exercise that helps them easily discover their Myers-Briggs personality type and then point them towards this book, and its been the client favorite by a landslide. Just like theres validation in knowing youre not alone as a Renaissance Soul, theres validation in seeing on paper your personality traits and the wide variety of careers that can supplement it. The book is very thorough and I love how it offers not only a huge number of careers for each type, but common threads, case studies, and how to make your personality type strengths work for you. Growin Up Goods. Ive been working one-on-one with clients since 2008, and in those 6 years I feel strongest knowing that I can offer my peeps the most help here. Its also the most favorite part of my biz, walking alongside a client who doesnt know what they wanna do when they grow up and being with them for 4 months while they experiment, get clarity, and take action. In our sessions, theres a mix of worksheets, journaling, and personalized homework assignments based on where they are and what theyre working on in real time. The Recession is Bullhonkey. Ive been running this blog series on and off for years now, and I never get tired of reading the stories from those who have gotten hired and/or started their own businesses (or sometimes both!) since 2008. Theyre full of vulnerable moments, total inspiration, and practical advice. Id be surprised if I didnt try to publish em at some point, but until then, well have the archives and the posts to come! Grown Up Gigs. It all boils down to the power of stories. I wanted a way to bring to the forefront the people who are following their dreams and making it happen in their passionate career while being able to pay their bills and live as grown-ups. It started as blog posts profiling crazy companies Ive found, then evolved into a 5 question interview series on my blog, and then a live monthly interview series, and now a 3 week long mega-event for free. I cant wait to get these lessons learned and stories shared out into the world, for the viewers to find their own clarity and inspiration! Body of Work: Finding the Thread that Ties Your Story Together. Again, not a career change book per se, but such an important one for those of us navigating the new world of work. Im with Pam in that, in the 21st century, we all have to view our careers as if were self-employed, with special attention paid to our entire body of work over our lifetimes professional projects, hobbies, volunteer work, etc. This book shows lots of case studies and asks many juicy questions to help the reader be able to not only find the thread that ties it all together, but explain it to others, too. I just finished reading this book last month, but I have a feeling Ill be recommending it lots. The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles. Man oh man, this is the bible for anyone who wants/needs to pursue a creative project or career. It can be read in under 2 hours and then needs to be picked up again and again to learn how to fight Resistance, do the work, rinse and repeat. Create Your Dream Career. I was through the moon when I realized I could bring the entirety of my work what Ive been coaching clients on and through for the past 6 years to the Internets on such a high quality level with such a low price tag thanks to CreativeLive. 3 days of dreaming, exploring and playing and connecting those concepts to helping you discover your dream career along with immediate access to my 50+ page, illustrated, rhyming (!) career change workbook? No brainer! And I miiiiiiiiiighta went overboard and wrote a 120+ page workbook to go along with the course, for those who choose to purchase it. Seriously, if you dont know where to start with the career change work, this is the place. Career Camp. This was the way for me to bottle the career change work I do one-on-one and be able to help more people at once, for a lower price point. I worked on it for about a year before I ran the first Career Camp from Sept-Dec 2013, and now Im over-the-moon to see the results pour in: Campers launching jewelry lines, taking on event planning clients, quitting jobs, getting ready to bike across the country, enrolling in restaurant management programs, and making a go at being an illustrator + artist + surface designer. And thats just 2 months after we officially wrapped up! At the end of the day, discovering what you wanna do when you grow up takes sufficient dreaming, time, exploration, research, planning, trust, uncomfortability, and action. As my current client Molly wrote, When I started trying to follow the bliss that Joseph Campbell speaks of, I could not do it. I started reading everything I could on finding your purpose, manifesting your destiny, but nothing was becoming apparent.() I hired a creative coach named Michelle Ward who I never met.() I cannot begin to tell you how much I have blossomed since I started working with her. I feel I can take a seat and focus on myself and my dreams with no judgement a security net to catch me and a voice to egg me on! Why did I not do this sooner? I keep asking myself.() Listen to that one nagging thing in the back of your brain that keeps pestering you and just take some time to let it breathe. Its scaryno doubt about that. And worrisomewhat if it doesnt work, blah, blah, blah. But, what if it does? And even if it doesnt, I think I have learned by now It will bring me to the next thing I am supposed to do. Anything you have questions on, or that has helped you discover your grown-up, passionate career that I havent mentioned? Whats your personality type (Im an ENFJ!)? Leave it below in the comments!

5 Ways to Shake It Up Without Changing CareersFeeling stifled? Desperate for a major change? Want to chase your dream to another continent, or to another career altogether? Feel any or all of those desires, but realize with a pang that you simply cant just up and totally change your career? googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) There are still ways you can get back in a groove and get excited about your job again without throwing the baby out with the bathwater.Try these five strategies first before decided on changing careers.1.Start from withinIf things are really stale, you always have two options that arent the nuclear one. First, you can change your role within your own industry. Or, you can keep your job but change to another field. Try switching from corporate law to entertainment law. Or from serving and bartending to managing. Or from at-home nursing to ER nursing. These feel like big changes, but they dont involve scrapping your enti re career2. Try your hand at consultingThis word covers quite a bit of ground. The nutshell of this strategy is to figure out what you know because of your career so far and figure out who needs that knowledge and skill. Could you teach? Develop textbooks or manuals or training guides? Recruit? This keeps you squarely in your wheelhouse, where youve been successful, but doesnt require you to learn a whole new set of skills.3.Think about how your role could changeTheres always the option of sticking with your current company, but changing jobs within it. Have a think about your colleaguesis there anything they do that you think would be more fulfilling to you? Ask questions. Chat with your boss about shifting your responsibilities and taking on new challenges. Figure out what you need to brush up on and proveif only to yourselfthat you can learn new things.4. Find joy in extracurricularsSo maybe you cant change even your job in a significant way, for whatever reason. You can still do more, and different, things Try volunteering, or take a guest bartending gig, or abflug a blog, or join forces with friends or colleagues to work for a foundation. Doing a bit of good in the world, or a bit of freelance work, can give you the breath of fresh air you need to put your work in better perspective.5. Keep honoring that little voiceMaybe youll follow these strategies and still cant deny that overwhelming desire to chuck it all and do something totally different with your life. Important Takeaways From Fox News Sexual Harassment Scandals
Important Takeaways From Fox News Sexual Harassment Scandals Months have now passed since Fox News star Bill OReilly and CEO Roger Ailes were ousted from the network. Both men left under a dark cloud of sexual harassment charges and payouts. Subsequently, a lawsuit filed against Fox News by commentator Julie Roginsky alleges that co-president Bill Shine aided and abetted Ailes acts of retaliation and harassment. Shine then resigned under the suspicion of enabling and hiding the wrongdoing. With our typical short attention span, most of us have already moved on to the next newsworthy story. Now that the OReilly and Ailes stories are shifting into the publics rearview mirror, what insights can we take away from the Fox News scandals?1. Sexual harassment is leise a problem. The obvious first lesson is that sexual harassment in the workplace still exists even in 2017.2. Corporate culture matters. The simplest definition for culture is the way things are done. A companys culture usually cas cades down from the top. Great things happen when corporate leadership promotes a culture of hard work, transparency, and fairness. Contrarily, bad things happen when leadership allows and perpetuates an unhealthy culture of harassment and abuse. A string of revealing lawsuits, books, and interviews about Fox News exposed that the corporate culture for women was, at best, highly disrespectful, or at worst, criminally predatory. At a deeper level, the covert culture at Fox was of forced silence and cover up. It is conceivable, if the New York Times did not report on Foxs $13 million in settlements, OReilly would be still in his job and would be continuing the same behavior. Creating and maintaining a company culture so people can speak up, without repercussion, should be among the top goals for any company.3. There is strength in numbers. In June 2016, former Fox a lawsuit against Ailes for sexual harassment. After July, the number of women who came forward to file complaints or made t heir stories public exploded. In July 2016, six more women claimedAiles harassed them. Later, Fox star Megyn Kelly toldinvestigators that Ailes sexually harassed her, as well. More women who alleged sexual harassment and a hostile environment include Laurie Luhn, Andrea Tantaros, Tamara N. Holder, Julie Roginsky, Alisyn Camerota, Wendy Walsh, Debbie Schlussel, and numerous others who wish to remain anonymous.A lesson learned is that sexual harassment misconduct is seldom an isolated incident. The possibility of wrongdoing increases when the corporate culture and leadership are one of power, hostility, sexism, and secrecy.4. It is always about the money.Fox, like other for-profit geschftslebenes, are just that in business for profit. Foxs initial resistance to fire Ailes and OReilly was rooted in their talents to make the company lots and lots of money. This month, 20th Century Fox, parent company of Fox News, reported that they paid out over $45 million related to sexual harassment claims. Sadly, Fox did not take consequential actions until their revenue stream and reputation were damaged. The public scandals, millions of dollars of settlements, and lost advertiser revenue seemed to make Fox finally decide that it was time to let both men go. When it comes to business, especially large entities like 20th Century Fox, remember its about the money. The struggle continues. Our attempts at consciousness-raising, enacting laws, litigation, and other initiatives have not eliminated sexual harassment and inequality in the workplace. The Fox News scandal showed us again that sexual harassment can be pervasive. Not every situation is the same but women (and men) should understand that there are opportunities and strategies to fight back.--Connie Wedel is a global citizen and HR executive who has worked with incredible employees, teams and leaders across 6 continents. How To Start Salary Negotiations Off On The Right Foot
How To Start Salary Negotiations Off On The Right FootTheres a slight disagreement about whether or not employees are being paid fairly. A 2016 report from Payscale found that while 73 percent of employers feel they offer fair pay, only 36 percent of employees agreed. As a recruiter, youre in a unique position to help close that gap because often youre the first person to begin discussion about salary negotiations with candidates. Its a big responsibility to make sure that both the candidate and the employer leave the negotiating table happy and feeling like their needs were met. Here are four expert tips on what you need to remember when you departure talking numbers with candidatesHow to start the discussionIf youd like the person youre interviewing to suggest the salary range they were thinking first, you can ask what they were paid at their last job as a way to begin the discussion. If they feel comfortable disclosing that information, then go ahead and move forward by asking, Wha t do you think would be an appropriate salary for this position? Keep in mind that this is just a way to start the discussion, nothings permanent at this stage just yet. Learning what your potential employee feels they should be paid can tell you a lot about the type of worker they think they are as well as their aspirations.Dana Case, Director of Operations, MyCorporationSalary ranges are just a way to get the convo about money started. recruitingtips MyCorporationClick To TweetKnow that some candidates are just in it for the moneyOne of the best ways to determine the underlying goals and interest level of a candidate is to lowball them on a contract offer. Before all the readers shake their heads in disapproval, here me out. Its a simple fact that people will take less money if they value the company, the position, and the experience. In my experience, an employee who is more concerned with money will be thoroughly offended and usually back out. Those who begin to negotiate are th e ones you want to keep. To sum it up, the people who would take the job at a significantly lower salary are those who are worth keeping.Pierre Tremblay, Director of Human Resources, DuprayIf a candidate is willing to take less money, they really want the job. recruiting DupraysteamClick To TweetIf you want to be transparent, you need to be realisticThe best way to make the discussion more honest and transparent is to simply be realistic. Its also important to understand the discussion is going to heavily depend on the experience of the employee. If youre hiring someone who has considerable job experience that is going to fill a critical senior role, the best thing to do is ask them for verification of their current salary. Typically, you need to offer a compensation package that is at least as strong. With a younger, more inexperienced candidate, you should make an offer that you truly believe is at the value of that role to your organization. Then give the candidate a clear path t oward increasing their pay.Leo Welder, Founder, ChooseWhatTo be honest with a candidate about salary you also need to be realistic. CW_LeoWClick To TweetNegotiations can help you get to know a candidateWhen it boils down to it, salary is just a number just one factor of many in making a potential hire. The best way to approach the salary conversation is to be understanding of both parties needs. Ask questions like, Do you feel valued at your current company? Where do you want to be a few years from now in your career? and What are you expecting if you made the jump to our company? The more information you obtain from the candidate, the better understanding you are of their needs, and the easier it is to empathize and truly see if this opportunity connects with them, both financially and personally. Seth Kuhlman, Talent Acquisition Manager, ScorpionUnderstanding both sides needs is the key to salary negotiations.
